The Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel’s signature Thara Thong restaurant is one of those places that will leave a lasting impression every time.
Enjoying a superb location right on the bank of the Chao Phraya River, the main 70-seat room is stylized around a traditional Thai pavilion - complete with teakwood flooring, tables and arched ceiling, almost like an ancient Siamese version of a cozy log cabin! The low wooden tables and floor seating also follows in line with the traditional Thai ways of dining, offering a totally unique experience. There is also a breezy terrace space outside right next to the water; a good spot for soaking up the dazzling lights after dark - Bangkok riverside dining at its finest!
Thara Thong is known throughout the city as one of the few remaining fine dining restaurants in Bangkok where you can find authentic Royal Thai cuisine. Still taking on the famous sweet, salty, spicy and sour flavors we all know and love, Royal Thai cuisine differentiates itself by using only the finest and freshest local ingredients, while close attention to detail is paid to both the preparation and presentation of the dishes. In other words, this is food fit for a King or Queen.
Some of the signature dishes expertly created by Thara Thong’s Head Chef, Chef Charoensri Vatanayut are hard to find on the street, and that’s why you’ll see a good mix of tourists and locals coming to sample the flavors. For example the mieng kam, a seldom seen plate of delicious bites wrapped up in leaves offers a great starter, served with a sweet dipping sauce. Another dish that you won’t find that easily in Bangkok is the zesty and slightly spicy pomelo fruit salad - a refreshing way to begin a meal and not so heavy as to spoil your appetite. The succulent slow roasted duck in red curry is one of all-time favorites, combining the tradition flavor of Thai curry with an ingredient, duck, that is normally swapped for a cheaper meat such as pork or chicken. The more common stir-fried chicken with lemongrass and cashew nuts is one dish that you’ll find at most Thai restaurants, but the version here comes with premium chicken and a non-oily sauce that will have you ordering seconds.
Guests dining at Thara Thong can opt for a tapas-style tasting menu, a full set-menu with all the most highly-recommended starters, mains and desserts or simply choose individual dishes from the extensive a la carte menu. These set menus offer great value for money too, especially considering the waterside location, quality of food, and the fact that you are at one of Bangkok’s finest riverside hotels.
It’s not only the food and decor that set this restaurant aside from the rest. From Monday - Saturday, both inside and outside guests are treated to two separate live performances which feature traditional Thai dancing, costumes and music - so make sure you have your camera ready to capture this memorable moment. In between the performances, classic Thai instruments are played softly (courtesy of the venue’s very own in-house musicians) to create an exotic ambiance.
The restaurant is open daily from 18.00-22.30 and can be found on the first floor of the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers. Guests traveling by river can also take advantage of the hotel’s complimentary shuttle boat service that leaves every 30 minutes from Saphan Taksin Pier, delivering you right next to the entrance to the restaurant in just seven minutes.
